Sri Lanka has many nicknames: Serendib, Ceylon, Teardrop of India, Resplendent Isle, Island of Dharma, Pearl of the Orient. This colourful collection reveals its richness, its beauty and the intensity of the affection it evokes in its visitors.
Lying in the Indian Ocean just off the Indian peninsula it is 447 km long and 219 km wide, approximately half the size of England. After years of living behind closed doors due to continued violence in the country, it once more, is opening its heart to travellers from around the globe. |
Still avoided by many because they perceive it as dangerous and unfriendly, the opposite is in fact true. (Of course, there are areas that one shouldn't visit, but the much of the island is interesting and picturesque. However you can avoid them if you follow the current international warnings on the country).
Well on the road to modernisation, the country and its people cherish their traditional values and take pride in their rich culture. Sri Lanka is a beautiful place, with excellent national parks, picturesque tea crops, spectacular beaches, interesting cities and unique wildlife that offers something to all who visit. |

Perhaps the best thing about Sri Lanka is that it’s not overcrowded with tourists! It means you can be sure of a hassle-free trip devoid of annoying tourist vendors (as found in nearby India). Here one can splurge on some really marvellous shopping and excellent cuisine, explore the landscapes and ancient monuments, gawk at inspiring architecture, stay in some really great hotels and lap up the country’s colonial heritage.

It has been said that a visit to Sri Lanka is a bit like a vacation at the circus as it seems to have a carnival atmosphere constantly. Where else can you watch bare-chested men cracking whips, snake charmers, boys on stilts juggling torches and scarlet-robed elephants lumbering along beside their mahouts in the centre of town, on a daily basis?
Sri Lanka will woo you as few other countries can. A ringmaster on the ‘exciting destination’ front, you'll be moved by the show, and applaud on departure
